More Croatia

Going to the movies Dubrovnik has three movie theatres where you sit under a canopy of stars.   We tried all three.  The theatre within the old city [**] walls (picture left) was our favorite.  It's in a back alley, a few blocks from the fountain.  A bit tricky to find -  ask locals for directions.  You can purchase snacks at the theatre or bring in a meal or snacks of your own (and we recommend that you do).  A bottle of wine is also nice.

Day excursions out from Dubrovnik.   We did our day excursions to points N and S of Dubrovnik on a rented motor scooter.  Go N of Dubrovnik for quaint fishing villages, beaches.  Go S of Dubrovnik for elegant coast towns, resorts, and yacht harbors.   We found many delightful Konobe on the Northerly excursions.  Very special: Lunch the peaceful seaside Kanoba, the Summerhouse Tavern,  (Konoba Ljetnikovac) [***], 15 km N of Dubrovnik.   Seaside seating overlooking Sipan Island.  Menu includes  fish, shellfish, risotto, pastries etc.  After lunch take a dip in the Adriatic.  Another delight:  Gverovic Orsan  [**$$]  (best bay view, best sunset), 7 km N of Dubrovnik.

We found more delightful Konobe on the island of Hvar.

Hvar  Hvar is (***) one of the"thousands" of islands on the Adrian Sea that belong to Croatia.  It  can be reached by the Jadrolinija ferries from several points along the coast.  The ferry ride from Dubrovnik takes a full day, making several stop at other lovely islands along the way.  Ferry ride is itself a worthy destination.  Hvar has great scenery, quaint country restaurants, beaches, shopping, boating.    Hotels located right on or near the Hvar harbor (photo) make an excellent base for multi day Hvar vacation.    Next to the harbor is a delightful piazza.  There is lots of elegant shopping on the piazza and offshoot alleys.   We rented a motorcycle  near the piazza for further exploration of the island.  To the left is a photo of a farmhouse in a remote hill on Hvar that we reached on one of our motorcycle excursions.  There are some popular beaches half way down the island but we much prefered beaches on the mini-islands right off Havar harbor (see islands in the distance in Havar harbor photo above)  that can be reached by small boats,   Go to St Clement (one of the small islands) for swimming beach, or just jump  into the water from you boat anywhere.
