Verona
Famous for the
Summer Opera Festival
[***,$$$]. Seeing opera staged in a Roman coliseum, still standing
after 2000+ years is an incredible experience. It's also amazing how well
suited an open air coliseum is to the acoustic requirements of the opera.
A Meal with A Grappa and Valpolicella Tasting Experience
If by chance you happen to be in the neighborhood
of Verona (Summer Opera Festival) or Lago Garda we recommend a mid-day detour
(plan 5 hours driving & dining) to
Antica Osteria della Valpolicella [**, $$] in the hill town of S. Rocco.
It's a bit out of the way to almost anywhere you a likely to go but
worth it. Definitely go for the traditional mid-day meal.
Dining on the ground floor, mostly indoor but there are a few outdoor tables
with a view of the main road, town square, and church tower. The food is superb. Beautiful aperitifs and
wines are offered to complement the meal. But what is even more remarkable
is the subterranean cave and tasting room for aficionados of Grappa and
Valpolicella wines. Ask to be shown the celler down stairs. The proprietor
is a collector of and authority on all the local brands, cheap to very
expensive.
