Italy - Roma

Getting to the sights of Rome    The amazing thing about Hotel S. Anselmo is that you can walk from the hotel to almost all the famous sights: Vatican, Fountain of Trevi, etc etc.   After a lovely breakfast in the hotel gardens you'll head out to the "city,"  strolling along past the Coliseum and roman Forum on your way to these sights.    By end of the day you'll be tired and wish to return by cab.  Typical cab fare was 4-5 Euros (2003) and well worth it.  Late night fares are higher but still worth it.   The Rome bus system is difficult to figure out.

Recommended pizza in Rome:  da Giggetto il Re della Pizza [**,$], Via Alessandria 43.  We love searching the world's greatest pizzas in every town we visit.  In Rome we found it in a very popular neighborhood restaurant.  It's a bit out of the way but that's what you want and need at the end of a Roma touring day:  escape from tourists and a chance to see real Romans.   At da Giggetto you will not be treated as a local, not a dumb tourist.  There is indoor and outdoor (on the sidewalk) seating.  Wonderful food and friendly service.  Dinner for two including wine and coffee was 35 Euros in Spring 2003.   This restaurant is far enough from the main sights that it may be a good idea to go there by cab.

The San Anselmo hotel is in a quite tree lined neighborhood, close to major Rome sights.  The hotel is actually a group of five pretty villas.  The main villa/entrance is sown above.   And most amazing for a location in the heart of Rome:  there is plenty of free street parking near the hotel.

Hotel S. Anselmo VERY highly recommended for your Rome accommodations: the Aventino Hotels group, and in particular Hotel S. Anselmo [$$],  Hotel Villa S. Pio, and Hotel Aventino, which are located in a very quite residential neighborhood within walking distance of the Forum and  Coliseum.   All the properties are rated three-stars.  S. Anselmo has a few 2-star units at bargain price (for Rome)  (you have to ask for them).  Imagine waking up to the sound of birds (and owls)  and starting the day with breakfast in a garden before heading out to face bustling, noisy, frantic Rome.  If your have a rental car you'll appreciate the ample and free parking in the hotel's neighborhood.  (Yes - hard to believe, but we had no problem with parking at this hotel!)
